Historic Coquitlam Sockeye Smolt Release Celebration

"The Kwikwetlem First Nation is on a mission: trying to resurrect a B.C. Sockeye salmon run that’s been dead for more than a century." The first of approximately 5,000 sockeye salmon smolts were released on Thursday, April 20, as a first step to restoring the Coquitlam River sockeye salmon population. This is likely the largest release of Coquitlam sockeye in over 100 years (since sockeye passage was blocked by the construction of the Coquitlam dam). Several members of the Coquitlam River Watershed Roundtable have been involved in the Kwikwetlem Salmon Restoration Program for many years. This is a proud moment for all those involved!
