Watershed Plan Progress Report 1

It is with great excitement that we announce a very special milestone: The completion of Phase 2 "Action Planning" for the Lower Coquitlam River Watershed Plan! Attached is the first progress report on the plan. Thank you to the partners and funders who made this possible, and to the community for being fully involved and engaged along the whole process - this is a significant accomplishment in the world of watershed planning and holds real promise of a new paradigm in sustainable development and watershed stewardship. Guided by the Open Standards for the Practice of Conservation, this plan is uniquely based on ecosystem services and associated measures of wellbeing. This process has provided an important forum to demonstrate the value of resilience based ecosystem stewardship and open standards planning, strengthening the Roundtable’s foundation and credibility. The Roundtable plays a key role as a catalyst for change, and the grants provided by the Real Estate Foundation of British Columbia and the Bullitt Foundation have enabled the Roundtable to take on the challenge of developing this adaptive watershed plan model, while fostering inter jurisdictional watershed based governance. The Roundtable’s mission is to promote and support conservation of a sustainable, healthy watershed environment, and it recognizes that it adds value by encouraging that decisions are made from an ecological and human wellbeing perspective and by developing the necessary partnerships and tools to make watershed wide decision making and planning possible. The development of this watershed plan is the first of its kind in Canada, and would not have been possible without the leadership and vision of the City of Coquitlam and City of Port Coquitlam to work together on a watershed wide scale, and support from the funders and other community partners.
