SUMMARY:Salmon Come Home Festival!
DESCRIPTION:Salmon Come Home is designed to promote public awareness about the spawning salmon that migrate back to Coquitlam. The prime viewing times for the salmon returning to the watershed are from the middle of October through until early November. \nSalmon Come Home is a free annual environmentally themed family event held each fall at the Hoy Creek hatchery site\, which is in Hoy Creek Linear park (follow the path between 2975 & 2980 Princess Crescent) across from the City Centre Aquatic Complex (located at the corner of Pinetree and Guildford Way\, Coquitlam). \nThis event is sponsored by the City of Coquitlam in partnership with the Hoy/Scott Watershed Society. This family event provides the opportunity to learn about the local environment while participating in various salmon and nature oriented activities. The tour will last about two hours\, depending on weather and walkers’ preference. Dress for the weather\, and wear comfy shoes or boots. Walks go rain or shine. Dogs on leash are welcome. Time will be taken to enjoy nature as we hike along. Roundtrip distance is 8 km (5 mi) with minimal elevation change. Meet at 1:00 pm. Return approximately 5:00 pm. DESCRIPTION:TREEFEST 2013 \nSaturday\, September 14 2013 at 11:00 AM \nThis will be the 20th annual Treefest — a community festival to celebrate the magnificent heritage tree collection on the Riverview Lands. This year’s event will take place on Saturday\, September 14th\, from 11:00 am – 4:00 pm at the Riverview Hospital grounds located at 2601 Lougheed Highway in Coquitlam. Come down and find the Coquitlam River Watershed Roundtable booth and enjoy the many FREE family activities\, including: \n– Guided tree tours every hour from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm\n– Children’s crafts and activities\n– Children’s tree walk at 12:00 pm\n– Community and artist displays\n– Live music by Ernie Higgins\, Highrise Lonesome\, Sharmaine and Luvena\, Stringz Aloud and Dragana\n– History bus tours\n– Blackberry Tea in the Serenity Garden from 12:30 pm – 4:00 pm\n– Heritage building tour at 1:00 pm\n– Food concessions\n– SPARC Antique Radio Museum open for tours \nThe festival site is located on the Riverview Hospital Grounds at 2601 Lougheed Highway and is outside of the Industrial Building. Access the site via Lougheed Highway from either the Orchid Drive entrance or Colony Farm Rd/Holly Drive entrance. Once you enter the grounds\, follow the festival signs and arrows to the Industrial Building. There is plenty of free on-site parking and parking attendants will help you find a spot. \nLocation Map \nListen to live music in the Serenity Garden while enjoying tea and blackberry shortcake. The garden also has wonderful shady picnic spots under the trees\, so feel free to bring a blanket and picnic lunch. Local artists including Gay Mitchell and Chieko Art Studio will have their work on display. The garden will be open the entire day with music and tea available from 12:30 pm – 4:00 pm. \nJoin Heritage Consultant and author\, Donald Luxton\, for a guided outdoor tour to the original hospital buildings. Meet in the Serenity Garden at 1:00 pm. Space is limited. \nJoin retired psychiatric nurses\, Fred Bennett and Anna Tremere\, and Don Gillespie of the Burke Mountain Naturalists on a history bus tour throughout the Riverview Lands. They will share their stories and anecdotes and will point out significant historical features throughout the site. Tours will be approx. 60 – 75 minutes long and buses will leave at 11:30 am (Anna Tremere)\, 1:00 pm (Fred Bennett) and 2:30 pm (Don Gillespie). A minimum $2 per person donation is required per ticket. Tickets will be available starting at 11:00 am at the Information Booth. Space is very limited and tickets will be first come\, first serve. \nEver wonder about the inventions and history behind devices like broadcast radio\, TV\, mp3 players and DVDs? SPARC Radio Museum showcases a large collection of antique consumer and amateur radios and broadcast equipment where you can see the progress of electronic technology through the decades. Exhibits include a replica of the radio room on the Carpathia\, the steamship famous for rescuing survivors of the Titanic. \nGuided tours of significant and unusual trees leave each hour from 11:00 am – 3:00 pm. Tours are 1 – 1.5 hours and are led by local arborists.
