Gleneagle Secondary Green Fair on November 12th, 2019
The Coquitlam River Watershed Roundtable has participated in more public outreach events in 2019 than ever before! Our amazing and dedicated volunteers have put in countless hours of time to help educate the public about some of the many issues affecting the health of the Watershed.
Recently, we began a new branch of our Invasive Species and Water Conservation Outreach Campaign that solicited input from community members on Watershed pressures that stem from mainstream cultural norms, vandalism / illegal activities & recreational activities. Our first stop? The Gleneagle Secondary Green Fair! Over 80 students answered questions that surveyed what they perceived to be the top pressures in the aforementioned categories.
Students identified
- Materialism / consumerism followed by disconnection from nature as the top mainstream cultural norm pressures
- Garbage-dumping and toxic substances / littering, followed by disturbing the peace as the top pressures from vandalism / illegal activities, and
- Activities involving non-consumptive uses of biological resources, followed by recreational vessels / vehicles and illegal harvesting as the top pressures from recreational activities
The input we received will be considered as part of our 2020 planning of Roundtable activities.
A huge thank you to all our participants, volunteers, coordinators and sponsors at Vancity and Metro Vancouver who contributed $15 000 plus in-kind contributions toward the outreach campaign!
