City of Coquitlam

Coquitlam is the sixth largest city in British Columbia and a regional urban centre on nature’s doorstep.

Coquitlam’s name comes from the Coast Salish word, kʷikʷəƛ̓əm, meaning “red fish up the river”, referring to a small early sockeye salmon that once ran in great number in the Coquitlam River and spawned in Coquitlam Lake.

The City of Coquitlam is an active partner in the Coquitlam River Watershed Roundtable with two seats on the Core Committee, one Councillor by Council appointment supported by an alternate Councillor as needed, and one environmental manager with a staff alternate.

Coquitlam’s Commitment to the Environment

Coquitlam takes a systemic approach to sustainability planning, completing an Environmental Sustainability Plan (ESP) in January 2022, the first of its kind for the City. The ESP aligns with the City’s overarching strategic plans and includes 135 short, medium and long-term actions organized into five themes: Climate Action, Built Environment, Waste Management, Water Management and, Natural Areas, Wildlife and Habitat. Coquitlam’s unique environmental programs have been nationally recognized.

The City of Coquitlam has served as an active member on BC Hydro Coquitlam River Monitoring Committee and the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm Salmon Restoration Project team since their inception in 2004.  Our City works alongside the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm First Nation, BC Hydro, Metro Vancouver, the City of Port Coquitlam, Ministry of Environment, Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the stewardship community to ensure adequate flows for fish in the Coquitlam River and provide support to feasibility studies leading to the restoration of sockeye above the Coquitlam Dam.

The Coquitlam River Watershed is valuable and integral to our community.
